Gibbs Cancer Center selected to continue NCCCP

Gibbs Cancer Center has been selected to continue its participation in the National Cancer Institute Community Cancer Centers Program, a network of community cancer centers focused on expanding research while improving access to quality care for underserved populations.

The renewed funding awarded the center $953,102 to continue participating in the program for the next two years. Gibbs Cancer Center was one of the original pilot sites selected for the program in 2007.

"We already had one of the best cancer programs in the country and being part of the NCCCP has made us even better," said Dr. James D. Bearden, Vice President of Research for Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System and Managing Physician of Gibbs Cancer Center. "If we are going to provide the most personalized care and stop the spread of cancer, we must work with others to learn each other’s best practices while also sharing our victories."

NCCCP is comprised of 21 community cancer centers across the country, and it has served approximately 53,000 new cancer cases each year. The majority of cancer patients are diagnosed and treated for the disease in their local communities, which makes it important for community cancer centers to offer the highest quality of care and research so these patients can remain home and not travel to major academic medical centers.

With a major focus on reducing cancer healthcare disparities, the 21 NCCCP community hospitals will continue efforts to enhance patient access to the latest, evidence-based cancer care, improve the overall quality of care, and expand research opportunities across the cancer continuum. Gibbs Cancer Center’s continued participation in the program helps to support NCI’s overall mission of accelerating cancer research and improving outcomes for cancer patients across the United States.
