Longtime Gibbs Cancer Physician Presented with Highest State Honor

During a Tuesday evening outdoor ceremony at Gibbs Cancer Center—Pelham to dedicate the gardens in honor of Julian Josey, M.D., the well-known Upstate cancer physician was surprised with the presentation of the Order of Palmetto.

South Carolina House Representative Rita Allison presented the award to Dr. Josey on behalf of Gov. Nikki Haley. The Order of the Palmetto is the highest civilian honor awarded by the Governor of South Carolina. It is awarded to persons who make contributions of statewide significance.

Dr. Josey, a Spartanburg native, has been a leader in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer for more than 40 years. He joined the Spartanburg Radiation Oncology practice at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System (SRHS) in 1970.

In 1976, Dr. Josey and his colleague and friend, Dr. James Bearden, proposed the formation of a cancer center at SRHS that would be dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. This eventually led to the establishment of Gibbs Cancer Center in 1999. Today, it is known as the Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute.

It is clear to see the impact and growth that Josey and Bearden have overseen for the SRHS cancer program.

• The Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute is a state-of-the-art facility with advanced diagnostic and treatment tools and highly skilled physicians and medical professionals.

• Bearden-Josey Center for Breast Health opened in 2008 and is named for the physicians in honor of their dedicated work.

• Additional Gibbs Cancer Center locations have opened in Gaffney (2010) and Greer (2012).

• Dr. Josey’s vision for patients and their families to have a calm, comforting and healing environment during any visit to Gibbs is evident in both inpatient and outpatient areas by gardens, fountains, and waiting areas awash in natural light.

• More than 140 clinical trials are underway at any time through the Upstate Carolina-Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP) at Gibbs.

• Gibbs Cancer & Research Institute has two dozen specially trained research nurses and more than 20 support staff members as well as doctors, technicians, social workers and other specialized medical professionals to monitor patients’ health before, during and after treatment.

Dr. Josey has academic appointments as a Clinical Professor of Radiology at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He is professionally affiliated with the American Medical Association, South Carolina Medical Association, South Carolina Medical Radiological Society, South Carolina Oncology Society, American Association for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, American College of Radiology, and the Radiological Society of South Carolina. He is the former president of the Spartanburg County Medical Society and former delegate of the South Carolina Medical Society.

What Others Are Saying

Bruce Holstien; SRHS President and CEO

“Before coming to SRHS in 2011, I was keenly aware of Dr. Josey’s growing national reputation as a leader of Gibbs Cancer Center and the Bearden-Josey Center for Breast Health. Both of these South Carolina treatment centers have achieved national recognition for excellence in cancer treatment and research, thanks to the talented medical team Dr. Josey has created here. He is a model for all that is good about our state and its fine citizens.”

Jimmy Gibbs; Chairman of Gibbs International, Inc.
Namesake, with his wife Marsha, for the Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute

“I have worked with Dr. Josey for many years now. Not only has his leadership taken Upstate health care to a new level, but his innovative programs have also been replicated across our state and nation. He has expanded SRHS and the Gibbs Cancer Center from health center that basically served the Spartanburg community to those which encompass service to the entire state and beyond. Perhaps his greatest contribution has been his ability to bring top-quality health care to diverse groups of patients, many whom have been traditionally underserved.”

Timothy Yeatman, M.D.; Director of Gibbs Cancer Center and President of Gibbs Cancer Center and Research Institute

“Dr. Julian Josey is ‘bigger than life.’ That’s a phrase generally reserved for a superhero, and when one realizes the impact that he has had on the health of people throughout this region, it’s clear that term is applicable here. Because of his efforts, there is no reason for cancer patients in South Carolina to leave the state for treatment. The highest quality cancer physicians and the absolute latest equipment and techniques are available to them right here.”

David Church, DHA; Vice President for Oncology and Home Care Services at Gibbs

“Dr. Josey is renowned for his community work. Having provided key leadership in regional beautification projects, he is almost as passionate about issues of community green space as he is about cancer care. His years of service on volunteer boards focus on topics including education, arts and health care.”

Robert Cochran, M.D.; Chairman Cancer Care Committee and Physician Liaison of Commission Cancer

“One measure of a great physician is the impact that physician has had on the health of his community. Dr. Josey has had an enormous impact that has improved the health and well-being of the people of the Upstate. His vision, power of persuasion and ability to motivate his large group of friends and colleagues has combined to create a wonderful center of excellence in cancer care for our region.”
