John Gallagher, MD graduated with a medical degree from Georgetown University. He completed his residency and internship in internal medicine at Duke University Medical Center. After medical school and military service as a lieutenant commander with the United States Coast Guard, he became a cardiologist. Dr. Gallagher completed his residency in cardiology at U.S. Public Health Service Hospital and a fellowship in cardiology at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Gallagher was a chaired Professor of Cardiology at Duke. He subspecialized in electrical disorders of the heart and performed the first successful catheter ablation of the heart while at Duke University in 1982. Dr. Gallagher is practicing internal medicine with a focus on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of adult illness. When it comes to communicating how to stay healthy to his patients, he stresses moderation with eating and exercising. Dr. Gallagher’s philosophy is that he wants patients to live the best they can, knowing from the get-go that there are things that are bad for their health. Everyone needs balance.
